Jagrati Awasthi secured All India Rank (AIR) 2 in Civil Services (CSE) Main examination 2020 results released by The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Friday evening (September 24). She has secured 1st rank across the country in the list of women candidates.

Took a calculated risk

Jagrati completed her B. Tech (electrical engineering) from Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT), Bhopal. After her engineering she started working at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) but quit the job in July, 2019 to completely focus on her UPSC preparation. She says leaving the job was a massive risk but after a lot of introspection I took the leap and decided to follow my passion of becoming an IAS officer. She called BHEL a launching pad towards her career, during an interview with Awaz-e-Khwateen. Jagrati believes that working in the government sector pushed her even closer to her dream. She says that the job brought in a sense of independence and security which gave her the impetus to risk it all.

COVID-19 a great leveller

Jagrati was taking coaching in Delhi before the pandemic but had to move back due to the outbreak. She believes that Covid in a way levelled the playing field for everyone. All the coaching centres had closed and everyone was stuck at home using the same resources. She affirms that abundance of quality online resources added great value to her preparation. She exclusively mentioned  https://onlyias.com/ Civilsdaily as websites she frequented to be on top of her preparation.

Family support instrumental for success

Jagrati spoke about how her family modelled their life around her schedule to help her realize her goals. Her family had stopped watching television and were with her on every step of the way. Emphasizing on how a supportive family leads to one reaching great heights, she said, “Family is the building block of society”. Her family never gave into the societal norms, pressuring her for marriage, she says their main goal was more for me to have financial independence and a stable career.

Vision build around reaching to the less-privileged sections of the society

Jagrati aims to work for the development of rural areas and women belonging to such areas in the future. She says that the government has been working for their upliftment for quite some times and a lot of schemes cater to their needs. She wants to create awareness about those schemes so that it reaches grassroot levels. She believes her dream of India is already materializing with the increased representation and success rate of women.
