Taliban Announces Ban on Women’s Sports

Image
Awaz e Khwateen A Taliban spokesperson has announced a ban on women's sports, especially women’s cricket in Afghanistan. Ahmadullah Wasiq, the deputy head of the Taliban's Cultural Commission while talking to SBS said, "In cricket, they (women) might face a situation where their face and body will not be covered. Islam does not allow women to be seen like this.” In August 2021, when Taliban rose to power in the conflict-ridden Afghanistan the world was apprehensive, questioning their extremist ideals. The Taliban had promised an inclusive government. They assured the people of Afghanistan and the world of a moderate approach.   It’s a man's world The Afghan men's cricket team has been given the approval to play the sport and represent Afghanistan on International level. Taliban even posted a congratulatory tweet yesterday for the Afghan cricket team after their win against Scotland. “Congratulation to all Afghan cricket team and the entire Afghan nation for

Women and Arthritis: Why are the odds stacked against you?

Image
Rutba Iqbal /  Awaz e Khwateen An Indian woman’s routine consists of taking care of everyone but herself. She’s always on her feet doing the dishes, frying a snack for that unannounced guest, washing her husband’s clothes and dusting her children’s rooms. In a hectic day filled with a jam packed schedule she barely gets a moment to herself, to acknowledge the constant pain that keeps tugging at her joints. At night when she finally gets a chance to sit down, the stiffness makes it hard to relax, the constant moaning in pain is seen as whining, the joint pain never lets up. Arthritis in women is not talked about with the intensity it deserves. Arthritis affects women more than men. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) 18% of women aged over 60 years have symptomatic osteoarthritis worldwide. Nearly, 45% of women over the age of 65 years have symptoms while 70% of those over 65 years show radiological evidence of osteoarthritis. The staggering number of women with disease

Sir Syed Ahmad Khan: The Crusader of Muslim community’s Modernisation through Modern Education

Dr. Babli Parveen   /  Awaz e Khwateen "Oh my dear children, you had reached a particular stage, and remember one thing that when I undertook the task, there was criticism all-around against me, and abuses upon me. Life had become so difficult for me that I aged before my age. I lost my hair, my eyesight, but not my vision. My vision never dimmed, my determination never failed, I built this institution for you, and I am sure you will carry the light of this institution far and wide; darkness will disappear from all around". (Sir Syed Ahmed khan Statement from his famous speech at the foundation of MAO College) The focus and major interest of Sir Syed Ahmad khan’s (1817-1898) life was modern education in its widest sense. He was a great Muslim scholar, a great visionary, statesman, educator, Jurist author and the founder of the Anglo- Mohammedan Oriental College at Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh , India , and the principal motivating force behind the revival of Indian Islam in th

Azizun Nisa Begum, mother of Sir Syed, was killed by the British forces in 1857

Guest Column, Mahino Fatima    / Awaz e Khwateen    Sir Syed Ahmad Khan is often credited, and rightly so, for bringing renaissance of modern education among Indian Muslims. Among Muslims in general, and Aligarhians in particular, his male comrades are also talked about in high esteem. Sadly, like any other historiography, much of history remains silent about the women who played their role in the Aligarh Movement, which is an organized attempt at developing modern outlook among Indian Muslims. I will be writing about a woman, who had an important role in shaping up the personality of Sir Syed. Azizun Nisa Begum, a woman who has lost it to the male dominant historiography. Rarely people talk about her, about whom Sir Syed wrote that as a mother, she was better than thousands of teachers. Azizun Nisa Begum never went to a modern educational institution but she could read Arabic and Persian well. Gulistan of Sadi was taught to Sir Syed by her. He wrote that she would keep a stick wit

APJ Abdul Kalam and Women Empowerment

Image
Rutba Iqbal / Awaz E Khwateen A young Kalam one day felt an insurmountable responsibility towards his mother when he saw her sacrificing her needs for him. "One day, at dinner, my mother went on giving me chapattis. When we rose, my elder brother chided me in private: “Kalam, do you realise you went on eating chapatis and Amma kept giving you even her share? It is a difficult time. Be a responsible son and do not make your mother starve”. I was seized by a shivering sensation which I could not control. I rushed to my mother and hugged her", recalled Kalam during a speech. A strong sense of respect  towards women was strongly instilled in Kalam since he was a child. To Kalam being a soldier meant to rally for the cause of women. He tried to boost the morale of women and recognised their potential and efforts in nation building. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was one of the first pro-women politicians in India. His approach to holistic national development was through

Navaratri and Naari Shakthi

Image
Guest Column, Dr Sri Lakshmi Ramu  / Awaz e Khwateen  Bathukamma and Navaratri Festivals have brought out the flowers, colour and garbha dances to the fore. For all of us who have been passing through “muted and masked” life in the last one year, there is some relief by way of celebration though with caution. People are coming together to celebrate life, togetherness and enjoy food. Beyond all this we need to know that festivals are designed in our country with a powerful message. Nava Raatri is when the Goddess is depicted in different forms and worshipped over Nine Nights. This festival and stories of past depicting various goddesses can be juxtaposed with the earthly woman who prominently reflects and nine roles rolled into one to become the modern day Naari – a reflection for all of us on this Navarathri festival. As  BALA TRIPURASUNDARI , the young girl grows up happily with virtues under the care of her parents with love and affection. She grows into  GAYATHRI , acquiring academi

Initially she decided to hold off going to the doctor due to the restrictions during COVID-19. She went into the appointment hoping for a simple diagnosis and some over-the-counter medications. Nadia and her whole family had to brace themselves when they got a Breast cancer diagnosis. Nadia's sister in a conversation with a UK based journal Breast Cancer Now recounted how the long journey following her diagnosis changed Nadia mentally and physically.
